Sash Window Refurbishment
Full overhaul of original box sash windows — weights, cords, pulleys and paintwork put back to working order.
A tired sash window is almost never a window that needs replacing. Nine times out of ten the timber is sound and the problem is a snapped cord, a seized pulley or forty years of paint welded across the meeting rails. We strip the window back, repair what is worn, and hand it back running smoothly on its original weights.
Repair before replacement
Victorian and Georgian joinery was cut from slow-grown timber that modern stock cannot match. Where a bottom rail has rotted we splice in a matching hardwood section rather than throw the sash away.
Everything is done in situ where possible, so your rooms stay usable and there is no fortnight with boarded openings.
What a refurbishment includes
Sashes removed and de-glazed only where necessary, parting beads renewed, staff beads eased, cords replaced in waxed cotton or nylon-core, weights re-matched to the sash and the whole box brush-sealed.
We finish with a hand-applied primer and two coats of low-sheen paint, cut in neatly to the glass.
Signs your sashes need refurbishing
- The window drops shut or will not stay up on its own
- Sashes rattle in the wind or whistle in cold weather
- Painted-shut windows that have not opened in years
- Flaking paint, soft putty or bare timber on the cills
- Condensation pooling on the inside of the glass
